Odell Beckham Jr. vs. Redskins – 12 receptions, 143 yards, 3 TDs

Play 11
Situation: 2nd and 9 at WSH 42
Description: Q3 – (8:56) E.Manning sacked at NYG 46 for -12 yards (R.Kerrigan).

Sack alert! Beckham runs across the formation pre-snap and runs an out-and-up against Breeland’s press-man coverage from the right outside. Manning’s first read is Beckham who is covered well and before Manning can do anything with the ball Kerrigan closes in for the sack as the free edge rusher. Great play by Kerrigan to not get sucked up into the play-action.

Play 12
Situation: 2nd and 8 at NYG 21
Description: Q3 – (2:52) E.Manning pass short right to D.Fells to NYG 37 for 16 yards (R.Clark).

Manning in I-formation runs PA bootleg right. Beckham runs a deep comeback route against Breeland’s off-man coverage while TE85 Fells runs a crossing route over the middle.

At the end of the bootleg, Manning finds Fells over the middle for a 16 yard gain. This play is made possible due to the PA bootleg that brings the inside linebackers, specifically LB52 Robinson too far into the fake which allows Fells to be open. Also, it doesn’t help that SS31 Merriweather runs to the sideline to cover his zone, but if he stayed more center and picked up Fells running into his zone he might have been able to pick him up Fells.

On the right side of the field watch Beckham’s comeback route. It’s a thing of beauty. Beckham starts slow and then picks up speed slightly angling his body inside in what looks like a go or post route. This pulls Breeland’s hips around expecting to have to sprint alongside of Beckham.

Instead Beckham shifts his weight around on a quick cut and is open near the sideline if Manning sees him. The play design is meant to take advantage of the zones by the linebackers, but Beckham would have been a great option as well due to his quickness and balance in his cuts. Excellent route running.

Play 13
Situation: 1st and 10 at NYG 37
Description: Q3 – (2:13) (No Huddle, Shotgun) E.Manning pass incomplete deep right to O.Beckham (B.Breeland). PENALTY on WAS-B.Breeland, Defensive Pass Interference, 23 yards, enforced at NYG 37 – No Play.

Beckham on the right outside runs a go-route and Breeland covers it well in press-man coverage. Breeland gets called for defensive pass interference by interfering with Beckham’s ability to catch the ball.

Here is the broadcast view of the route and penalty:

As you can see Breeland is playing Beckham the entire way as opposed to turning for the ball. He times his jump too early and hooks Beckham’s arm underneath his to try to break away the ball.

The NFL released recently that this should not have been called DPI, but I am not totally sure I agree with them. Breeland doesn’t ever locate the ball and is playing Beckham. Plus he hooks him underneath the arm… but I could be mistaken.

Situation: 2nd and 5 at WSH 35
Description: Q3 – (1:30) (No Huddle, Shotgun) E.Manning pass short middle to O.Beckham for 35 yards, TOUCHDOWN [R.Kerrigan]. J.Brown extra point is GOOD, Center-Z.DeOssie, Holder-S.Weatherford.

Manning in shotgun has Beckham and Ogletree as the outside wide receivers with Parker in the right slot. Redskins are in Cover 2 with four underneath zones.

Manning fakes to the flat receiver WR83 Parker drawing Breeland out of the play completely and then looks towards Beckham who is running a slant route over the middle of the field from the right outside. Parker in the flat is the decoy on this play meant to draw the defenders away from the real play with Beckham.

SS41 Thomas is occupying the inside right zone and attempts to cover Beckham, but Thomas overpursues the speedy receiver.

Manning makes a great throw with anticipation to Beckham, who uses his speed to breakaway for the long touchdown. It must be noted that FS25 Clark in deep coverage takes a terrible angle at Beckham which helps him score.

Situation: 2nd and 5 at WSH 49
Description: Q4 – (14:16) (No Huddle) E.Manning pass short left to O.Beckham pushed ob at WAS 37 for 12 yards (T.Murphy).

Beckham runs a WR screen pass from the left outside. He avoids two quick tackles from SS41 Thomas and CB39 Amerson for the first down. Amazing elusiveness combined with terrible tackling.

What a shame as Amerson is typically seen as one of the Redskins’ better tacklers.

Play 16
Situation: 3rd and 3 at WSH 30
Description: Q4 – (12:26) (No Huddle, Shotgun) E.Manning pass deep right to O.Beckham for 30 yards, TOUCHDOWN NULLIFIED by Penalty. PENALTY on NYG-J.Pugh, Offensive Holding, 10 yards, enforced at WAS 30 – No Play.

Manning in shotgun motions Randle underneath Beckham for a twin stacks right.

The Redskins are in Cover 1 Robber where FS25 Clark has deep coverage responsibilities while SS31 Merriweather steps up into the center of the field.

Manning snaps the ball and Beckham runs a go-route and is wide-open on the right outside. The initial motion to twin stacks is what causes the problem. Breeland moves to the high position while, Biggers stays on the line of scrimmage. Bigger edges over to line up underneath the bottom receiver I think in an attempt to make it clear that he will take Randle. Breeland probably thinks he is signaling that he will take the outside route as opposed to the outside player leaving Beckham uncovered.

Ultimately the touchdown gets called back for offensive holding by the RT Pugh, but Beckham shows his ability to jump and make a diving grab, while the Redskins struggle with miscommuncation again in their secondary. The Redskins catch a lucky break here.

Play 17
Situation: 2nd and 10 at NYG 45
Description: Q4 – (7:23) (Shotgun) E.Manning pass short right to O.Beckham to WAS 47 for 8 yards (B.Breeland) [W.Compton].

Beckham runs a slant route against Breelands man-to-man coverage on the right side. Beckham’s initial step outside is what frees him and then Beckham cuts in front of Biggers to secure the catch. Breeland tackles him shortly there after. Another pristine route by Beckham. He was helped by Biggers “pick” though.

Play 18
Situation: 3rd and 2 at WSH 47
Description: Q4 – (6:55) (No Huddle, Shotgun) E.Manning pass short right to O.Beckham ran ob at WAS 26 for 21 yards (R.Clark). Penalty on WAS, Defensive 12 On-field, declined.

Beckham lines up against Okoro’s press-man coverage and runs a hitch route to the sideline. Beckham does a great job of stopping and making Okoro run right past him. He then uses his elusiveness to avoid the tackle and move up the field.

Credit also goes to Manning for the well thrown ball on the timing route.

Play 19
Situation: 2nd and 20 at WSH 36
Description: Q4 – (6:16) (No Huddle, Shotgun) E.Manning pass short left to O.Beckham to WAS 24 for 12 yards (T.Murphy).

Beckham on the left outside. OLB93 Murphy is responsible for the underneath zone near the sideline while CB39 Amerson is in the zone over top since the Redskins are in Cover 3 here.

Beckham runs an excellent hitch route nd Amerson overpurses Beckham missing the tackle.

Play 20
Situation: 3rd and 8 at WSH 24
Description: Q4 – (5:42) (No Huddle, Shotgun) E.Manning pass short middle to R.Randle to WAS 6 for 18 yards (B.Breeland, R.Clark) [F.Kearse].

Beckham runs a deep hitch route against Amerson’s off-man coverage on the left side. Beckham’s hitch completely turns Amerson’s hips around, but Manning never looks in that direction preferring Randle running across the middle on the in-route. Breeland actually has excellent coverage on Randle, but Randle snags the ball out of the air.

Play 21
Situation: 1st and 6 at WSH 6
Description: Q4 – (4:50) (No Huddle) E.Manning pass incomplete short right to O.Beckham (B.Breeland).

This is one of Breeland’s best plays all night. Beckham runs a fade route to the back right of the endzone. Breeland in press-man coverage sticks with Beckham the entire route. Beckham grabs the ball out of the air, but Breeland is able to rip the ball out preventing the interception.

Play 22
Situation: 2nd and 6 at WSH 6
Description: Q4 – (4:45) E.Manning pass short left to O.Beckham for 6 yards, TOUCHDOWN. J.Brown extra point is GOOD, Center-Z.DeOssie, Holder-S.Weatherford.

This is one of the most frustrating plays if you are a Redskins fan. Manning is on the 6 yard line with Beckham on the left outside. Amerson is in deep off-man coverage over top of him.

Beckham runs a simple slant route and catches it for the touchdown. One of the easiest touchdowns he will ever get. Amerson NEEDS to play press-man coverage on Beckham or at the very least closer to the line of scrimmage.

Overall, Beckham was incredible. Breeland did the best out of the Redskins corners only allowing 3 receptions on his 6 targets but there were still multiple times Beckham was open and Manning went elsewhere. Beckham will be a force in the NFC East for years to come.
