Geno Smith vs Bears

Geno Smith vs the Bears

[follow_me]

1st and 10 at NYJ 25 (11:23) (Shotgun) G.Smith pass short left to D.Nelson to NYJ 25 for 6 yards (K.Fuller). FUMBLES (K.Fuller), ball out of bounds at NYJ 25.

Cover-3 Zone

A well timed curl, i’d prefer to see Smith put this on the outside shoulder to give Nelson a chance at running it up the field.

3rd and 2 at NYJ 27 (10:31) (Shotgun) G.Smith pass incomplete deep right to J.Amaro.

Cover-3 Zone

A poor effort on the play fake again, Smith doesn’t get the full extension or put it into the RB. This is a minor detail but it’s one of those things that if you’re good at you’re only helping your team. A good play fake is going to open up coverage. Geno runs and finds a good throwing lane to try and hit Amaro on but it’s going to force Amaro to make a difficult catch behind him. I don’t think there’s a better throwing lane available for this throw and I think Amaro should catch this.

1st and 10 at NYJ 38 (8:04) G.Smith pass incomplete deep left to J.Cumberland.

Cover-3 Zone

Extending Play, Bad Placement, Bad Mechanics

When people talk about a Quarterback showing flashes, this is it. This play right here is one that I’d point to to demonstrate how frustrating a QB who shows flashes is. Smith’s going to evade a rusher after a double fake, move to his right but then he doesn’t reset his feet, hops while throwing and overthrows an open Cumberland.

Even though he’s decisive when making that first man miss, it shows that he gets mentally rushed afterwards. It’s not a good trait.

2nd and 4 at CHI 39 (6:49) (Shotgun) G.Smith pass short middle to J.Kerley to CHI 28 for 11 yards (D.Williams).

Cover-3 Zone

Much better play fake here by Smith, he fully extends his arms as he’s putting the ball out for Johnson. You can see how it affects the play because LB #55 Lance Briggs ends up biting and following Johnson until Johnson goes for the cut block. As a result, Jeremy Kerley finds a wide open space in the middle of the field.

2nd and 8 at CHI 26 (5:39) G.Smith pass short left to D.Nelson pushed ob at CHI 18 for 8 yards (K.Fuller).

Cover-2 Zone

Another really bad play fake from Smith. It doesn’t affect this play at all, but it’s just really bad. Geno puts this ball into a better spot for Nelson but it’s still not optimal. A lower throw would give Nelson more of an opportunity to get yards after the catch since this one forces Nelson to hop in order to catch the ball just over his head.

1st and 10 at CHI 18 (5:10) (Shotgun) G.Smith pass deep left intended for D.Nelson INTERCEPTED by K.Fuller at CHI -7. K.Fuller to CHI 5 for 12 yards (T.Bohanon). PENALTY on NYJ-N.Mangold, Unnecessary Roughness, 15 yards, enforced at CHI 5.

Extending Play, Bad Decision

Cover-3 Zone

One of the problems with Quarterbacks who extend plays is that sometimes they don’t realize that extending a play doesn’t mean you have to make a play. They bought enough time for the play to try and further develop and if nothing has, they’re free to just let the play end. When they don’t realize that they end up being classified as players with a hero syndrome. Where they get the feeling that they need to make a play or the team will fail, or in other words be the hero. This is one of those clear as day situations of hero syndrome.

Here is all the background information on why Geno shouldn’t force this throw before we get into the actual act of forcing this throw: It’s the middle of the 3rd quarter. The team is down by only 11 points, two possessions. It’s 1st down. You’re already in easy field goal range.

When the play starts it looks like Smith is aiming for Cumberland in the middle of the field for his first read, and looking at the play design it looks like this play isn’t meant to get into the endzone and is just trying to move closer down the field. Cumberland is wide open of course, but Geno decides to get aggressive. This isn’t a bad thing, you should get aggressive from time to time. So he decides to look at his other options and that’s when the pocket is compromised. I don’t even know what he thought he saw here when he made this throw, because there is no space for Nelson to make this catch. Fuller is in front of him, there’s a safety coming towards him, there’s nothing here. This should be a throwaway or a run.

2nd and 10 at CHI 10 (2:06) G.Smith pass short right to C.Ivory to CHI 2 for 8 yards (D.Williams).

Cover-2 Zone

Another poor play fake, but good placement on the screen. Right out of the defenders reach and into a spot that gives Ivory the ability to turn and assess the field. It’s all very basic though.
