Geno Smith vs the Bears

1st and 10 at NYJ 47 (14:37) G.Smith pass short right intended for C.Johnson INTERCEPTED by R.Mundy at NYJ 45. R.Mundy for 45 yards, TOUCHDOWN. R.Gould extra point is GOOD, Center-J.Cain, Holder-P.O’Donnell.

Bad Decision

Cover-3 Zone

A bad decision by Smith on the first pass of the game puts the Jets behind immediately. Smith tries to force the ball by throwing over #92 Stephen Paea and can’t fit it into the tiny space between him and Mundy, so the ball goes wide and is intercepted. There’s no excuse or anything for this, when you see you can’t get it in there you’ve got to throw it away. It’s first down, the score is 0-0 and you’re trying to force the ball into a bad spot.

2nd and 6 at NYJ 15 (13:51) (Shotgun) G.Smith pass short right to C.Ivory to NYJ 32 for 17 yards (C.Conte).

Cover-2 Zone

Smith’s going to read the crossing TE, which pulls one of the LBs to the left side and then go back to Chris Ivory in the middle. Nothing much to read into here.

3rd and 3 at NYJ 39 (12:07) (Shotgun) G.Smith pass incomplete short middle to J.Kerley (L.Houston).

Cover-3 Zone

Smith makes the immediate read on the nickel corner as he’s dropping back and sees him let Kerley pass, while the LB moves from his A-gap position to cover the flat. Kerley’s going to be wide open and Geno’s looking to hit him but the ball gets knocked down by Lamar Houston, and to me it doesn’t look like there’s anything Geno could do about it. The ball is released high, nothing wrong with the motion, just Houston getting his hand in the way.

2nd and 6 at NYJ 24 (9:24) (No Huddle) G.Smith pass short middle to J.Cumberland to NYJ 35 for 11 yards (D.Williams; J.Bostic).

Moving Defense

Cover-2 Zone

After the play action, Smith follows Jace Amaro as he crosses the field with his eyes and even his body, lining up his shoulder with Amaro as he moves past the middle of the field, and then bringing it back to throw the ball to Cumberland once the LBs have cleared out. It’s a good subtle sell.

3rd and 4 at NYJ 41 (7:43) (Shotgun) G.Smith pass deep right to E.Decker to CHI 40 for 19 yards (C.Conte; I.Frey).

Rushed Footwork, Late Throw

Cover-3 Zone

Smith’s footwork doesn’t sync up with any break here. You can see it looks a little bit rushed too, which messes with the timing of the final step and Decker’s break on his post. It won’t matter because Decker sells his vertical very well, keeping shoulders over knees right up until he’s ready to go inside and then making a very quick break but Smith’s mistiming might be causing Decker to be waiting for the ball too long and stopping this from being a bigger play than it was. If Smith gets the ball on time to Decker, say it reaches him right before the hash instead of right after, he would have given Decker the chance to break the safeties tackle or even dodge him. It’s hard to ‘fault’ Smith, but I think it’s a clear spot where he could improve.

1st and 10 at CHI 40 (7:04) (No Huddle, Shotgun) G.Smith pass short left to J.Kerley to CHI 39 for 1 yard (J.Bostic).

Bad Placement

Cover-3 Zone

You know what’s something you shouldn’t do on a screen pass? Put the ball to the wrong shoulder of the receiver. This is a bad screen throw. Kerley only gets one yard because he’s turning back to the ball, and starting his acceleration with a linebacker coming down on him.

2nd and 9 at CHI 39 (6:27) (Shotgun) G.Smith pass short right to C.Ivory to CHI 16 for 23 yards (D.McCray).

Moving Defense

Cover-2 Man

This one’s a good job by Smith. The Vertical routes turn this into a forced man coverage (since whether it’s Cover-3 Zone or Cover-1 Man, all of the verticals dictate that everyone is going into man coverage) and Geno recognizes that. He keeps his eyes down the middle of the field and then does a quick turn and throw to Ivory. The throw is well placed since he’s throwing it to a RB not known for his hands. It’s on the inside shoulder and gives Ivory the chance to turn his head and immediately evaluate the field on the catch, specifically the linebacker coming straight at him from the middle.

2nd and 9 at CHI 15 (5:09) (Shotgun) G.Smith sacked at CHI 28 for -13 yards (E.Ferguson).

Bad Decision

Cover-3 Zone

You have to make a decision when pressure is in your face. Smith’s not at fault for the pressure on this play and although he took a big sack, he handled it pretty well and also pretty poorly. When the first rusher comes, he’s purposely slow to react in order to get the last step on him and run to his right, it’s the same move Wilson and Romo have killed people with except they like to take a full spin. The rusher is able to get Smith’s arm and that’s what ends up giving the sack to the Bears. At this point Geno’s done everything well but then he takes two stutter steps once he realizes he’s caught instead of just wrapping his arms around the ball and taking a sack.

That’s where things go wrong in Geno’s mind. Whenever he extends a play he has a habit of feeling the need to make a play instead of just making the smartest decision available. In this case, the stutter steps and fake were him trying to do too much and giving the Bears a chance for an even bigger play. As a Quarterback, it’s imperative that you just have to know when the play is over and move on, especially in the first quarter of the game.

3rd and 22 at CHI 28 (4:29) (Shotgun) G.Smith pass short right to J.Cumberland to CHI 25 for 3 yards (J.Allen; L.Houston).

Cover-3 Zone

Nothing to read into here.
