2. Run Defense
One of the weakest parts of Gregory’s game that will force him to be a situational pass rusher to start his NFL career is that he is often bullied in run support relying on his speed in the open field to make play. While this works in backside pursuit and occasional splash plays, this won’t help him nearly as much when an offensive lineman comes directly at him in a downhill running play like off-tackle, which is a staple play for most offenses.
Although Gregory’s pursuit is excellent, he sometimes completely quits on plays early where they are running opposite of him. In the first play you can see just how great his pursuit is from behind, but in the next two he completely quits on any attempt to backside pursue the runningback. It was disappointing to see his inconsistency in motor as he has all the physical tools necessary to be a stud outside linebacker in the next level.
Edit 4/3/2015: His lack of pursuit might be the result of the defensive call to just play the cutback and stay in his determined spot.
While watching some of his plays I noticed that he always seemed to be in an opposing players face. I love aggression especially coming from an edge rusher, but it seemed chippy where he was acting out of uncontrolled emotions/intensity. This has the potential for him to be the target of personal flags as he sometimes retaliates. Watch Gregory slam #13 into the ground on the left side of your screen.
Gregory also has a tendency to be late off of the snap. Even though, he has excellent burst and a great first-step once he starts moving, he is way too often the last defender left on the line of scrimmage to fully utilize his strengths. With this trait you have to wonder if he has poor reflexes or if he is just not watching the ball with his peripherals and waiting for the blocker to make the first move. Hopefully, it’s the latter case for him.
Pro Comparison and Draft Projection
Pro Comparison: Dion Jordan. Both are very athletic, have great length, and are great in space due to their natural athletic ability while both need plenty of time to develop in the NFL.
Projected Round: Early first round based on his athletic talent and ability. Coaching will be crucial at the next level.
