Scouting Report: Dante Fowler Jr., DE/OLB, Florida

Usually when an edge rusher has good outside moves, they will pair this with a spin move back inside. Vic Beasley’s spin move is the best in this class while Shane Ray’s spin move is probably the worst in the class so comparing Fowler’s I put him on the lower end closer to Shane Ray.

He takes a few monster steps that seem awfully predictable when compared to his other moves. The point of the spin move is that it should look exactly like an edge rush where you commit to the outside shoulder and then use the off-balanced offensive lineman’s weight against him to turn back inside. Fowler fails to do that and wants to create his spin move in space in front of the offensive lineman.

Although the monster steps usually only happen on committed spin moves from the beginning, here Fowler combines a club-swim move and uses a spin to shake the offensive tackle after getting him off-balanced. This is excellent to see as this will give defensive coordinators something to work with in the pros.

Doesn’t have the best bull-rush (1st play), but has a surprisingly good bull-jerk that should be used more often (2nd play).

Out of all of his pass rushes this might be my favorite even though it’s admittedly against a backup right tackle. Fowler shows his violence and speed-to-power to push the right tackle completely out of the play. Here the offensive lineman got too vertical and Fowler use that to his advantage and applied leverage properly.

Here Fowler shows great hip and ankle flexibility to turn the corner and hit the quarterback.

Good effort on pass rush. Spins to the inside and chases Jameis Winston around the pocket finally taking him town from behind with the help of his teammates.

Although sometimes Fowler shows great pursuit, he sometimes doesn’t give it his all like in this play below. It’s second overtime on 2nd down in the bowl game of his final season. Maybe I’m being super-critical, but I expect to see him pursuing the quarterback at all costs in this situation.
