What Happened to David Amerson?

2014 Season

The Redskins made a lot of moves to shore up their secondary for the 2014 season, but injuries to DeAngelo Hall and Tracy Porter destroyed the already tenuous secondary. This forced 4th round rookie Bashaud Breeland and Amerson into more prominent roles in coverage.

Press-man Coverage - Positive Plays

Amerson plays solid press-man coverage on his receiver in the following plays and limits their movement off of the line of scrimmage. This is great news for ‘Skins fans as this is the type of coverage Redskins fans should expect to see more from Joe Barry next season.

Press-man Coverage - Negative Plays

It seems like when Amerson is beat in press coverage it’s typically due to quick lateral moves off of the line of scrimmage. This is a very common method to separate from press-man coverage. To prevent this a cornerback must focus on the hips of the wide receiver and by getting good hand placement on the wide receiver to jam him on the line of scrimmage. The hips as opposed to the upper body moves less relatively, so this helps you not get burned off of the line instantly. Hopefully Chris Culliver, the Redskins newly signed free agent cornerback from the 49ers can help him with this tactic as he is already adept in press-man coverage.

Tackling Ability in Space

One of the things Amerson struggles with is tackling in space. In this play, Amerson starts on the outside in off-man coverage across from Dez Bryant. The play is a short screen pass by the Cowboys to take advantage of the soft coverage shell the Redskins are showing pre-snap.

Amerson overcommits right (Bryant’s left side) and misses him completely allowing him to scamper for a long 60+ yard touchdown. With no safety help nearby, Amerson needs to be less aggressive on his angles and should play to prevent the big play here. Allowing Bryant a couple more yards without compromising a big play is more than important than a hit-or-miss tackle on the line of scrimmage.
