Scouting Report: Eli Harold, DE/OLB, Virginia

The biggest problem with Harold’s overall pass rushing game is his inability to get off of blocks once hands are on him. This was evident throughout all the games I watched. Watch the first play closely as Harold loses his momentum as Cameron Erving drives him backwards. This is an AWFUL showing by Harold.

To illustrate the other aspect of hand placement being so important, watch in these two plays as Harold gets his hands inside the chest of the offensive lineman and uses his power to push back the offensive lineman. Harold NEEDS to be more consistent at this. He clearly has power and pursuit, but needs to hold off the opposing blockers’ hands. In the second play, Harold shows excellent pursuit to chase down the ball carrier.

Harold has active hands, but even so doesn’t get the separation you’d expect to be consistent enough to be a top tier prospect in this draft.

Against Florida State, Harold matched up against future first round pick Cameron Erving who used a cut block, taking out Harold by his knees, multiple times to set up passing lanes and to neutralize him. Harold needs to be ready for this and have his hands ready to knock Erving down to avoid being taken out of the play.
