Play 11
Situation: 2nd and 14 at WSH 16
Description: Q2 - (11:47) (Shotgun) C.McCoy pass incomplete short left to P.Garcon (V.Davis).

Endzone View

McCoy lines up in shotgun with three WRs. McCoy runs play-action to Morris to draw the ILB to the inside and then immediately throws the ball to Garcon on a slant route. CB Davis is all over Garcon and goes over top of him to break up the play. The officials actually flagged this play with what appeared to be pass interference on Davis, but they picked up the flag after a quick discussion.

This play should have been called pass interference based on how Davis contacts Garcon by going over top of him. There is clear contact with the left hand on the outside shoulder before the ball arrives and Davis turns Garcon in the air.

Play 12
Situation: 3rd and 14 at WSH 16
Description: Q2 - (11:42) (Run formation) C.McCoy sacked at WAS 8 for -8 yards (J.Newsome). FUMBLES (J.Newsome), and recovers at WAS 9. C.McCoy to WAS 9 for no gain (R.Jean Francois).

Sack Alert! Trent Williams lets OLB91 Newsome by for the easy sack-fumble on a speed rush around the edge. Terrible outside protection by LT Williams on this play which led some to question his health, since he missed the last game with an injury.

Play 13
Situation: 1st and 10 at WSH 16
Description: Q2 - (6:48) (Shotgun) C.McCoy pass short right to P.Garcon to WAS 16 for no gain (J.Freeman).

Endzone View

Quick screen pass to Garcon in the right slot. RG Chester has to get to LB Freeman to set this play up. Good read by Freeman to shut down the screen pass. Morris does a good job blocking out the safety on the outside.

Play 14
Situation: 2nd and 10 at WSH 16
Description: Q2 - (6:08) (Shotgun) C.McCoy pass deep right intended for P.Garcon INTERCEPTED by G.Toler at WAS 39. G.Toler to WAS 19 for 20 yards (A.Morris). PENALTY on IND-G.Toler, Defensive Holding, 5 yards, enforced at WAS 16 - No Play.

The play resulted in a pentaly on CB Toler for defensive holding. He grabs and pulls Garcon 5 yards beyond the line of scrimmage, which is how he was able to play the interception perfectly. Garcon is running a go-route from the right outside. The safety was shading the right side of the field but moves back to the middle at the snap, which makes Garcon the correct read on the play, since the CBs were playing man-to-man on on the left side with Roberts and Jackson.

Play 15
Situation: 1st and 10 at WSH 21
Description: Q2 - (5:52) (Shotgun) C.McCoy pass short left to S.Moss pushed ob at WAS 34 for 13 yards (V.Davis).
Sideline View

Endzone View

McCoy runs play-action bootleg to the right. OLB93 Walden reads it well and chases down McCoy to the outside. The play design was floods to the left side of the field and TE Reed does a good job of pulling the CB up the field allowing Moss on the drag route to be open underneath. Good play design overall by Gruden.

Play 16
Situation: 2nd and 5 at WSH 39
Description: Q2 - (4:32) (Shotgun) C.McCoy pass short right to J.Reed to IND 45 for 16 yards (L.Landry).
Sideline View

Endzone View

McCoy has four outside WRs. TE Reed is in the right slot and runs a slant route over the middle. Watch Reed’s cut back inside. He completely fools the LB50 Freeman which is an obvious mismatch in off-man coverage based on Reed’s playmaking ability.

If you look back at last week’s offense versus the 49ers when the Redskins didn’t have Reed and look at how they utilize him when he’s healthy, you will notice he’s a huge part to this offense and consistently gets separation. It’s very unfortunate he is so injury-prone.

Play 17
Situation: 2nd and 10 at IND 45
Description: Q2 - (3:08) (Shotgun) C.McCoy pass incomplete short right [C.Redding].

Endzone View

McCoy has trips left and Reed alone on the right. This time the FS covering Reed is playing man-to-man coverage right at the line of scrimmage to slow him down, so he’s covered. The pocket collapses through OLB91 Newsome through RT Compton, so McCoy has to scramble to the right. McCoy does a good job of getting rid of the ball to avoid the sack by throwing it out of bounds.

McCoy starts with the trips left and is watching Jackson on an in-route but he’s covered, which is why McCoy pump-fakes while the pocket is clear. Great coverage by the Colts defense here.

Play 18
Situation: 3rd and 10 at IND 45
Description: Q2 - (3:00) (Shotgun) C.McCoy pass deep left to A.Roberts to IND 23 for 22 yards (G.Toler).
Sideline View

Endzone View

McCoy has trips left with Roberts in the inside running a deep out-route. CB Toler is in man-to-man coverage and is trailing Roberts after his cut. McCoy throws a high ball that Roberts brings down for a big gain on the play, but McCoy should have thrown this ball lower and more to the outside, which would have netted Roberts a bigger gain on the play. I give the credit more to Roberts for elevating and making the catch.

McCoy does step up confidently into the throw even though RT Compton lets DE90 Reddit hit McCoy right after he throws the ball. The Redskins offensive line needs to communicate better on picking up pressure. Specifically when a RB and a TE stay to block.

Play 19
Situation: 1st and 10 at IND 23
Description: Q2 - (2:18) (Shotgun) C.McCoy pass incomplete deep left to P.Garcon (V.Davis). PENALTY on IND-V.Davis, Taunting, 12 yards, enforced at IND 23.
Sideline View

Endzone View

McCoy in shotgun has Garcon on the outside left going up against CB Davis’ press coverage. McCoy does a good job pre-snap of reading that the safety is playing more on the right side to give Garcon a chance at this ball.

The Redskins were bailed out on this play. Davis taunts Garcon after the play and gets penalilzed. Overall great coverage by CB Davis to stop the TD.

Play 20
Situation: 1st and 20 at IND 21
Description: Q2 - (2:06) (Shotgun) C.McCoy pass short middle to R.Helu for 21 yards, TOUCHDOWN. K.Forbath extra point is GOOD, Center-N.Sundberg, Holder-T.Way.
Sideline View

Endzone View

McCoy has trips right and Helu in the backfield. McCoy starts the play looking at WR Roberts on the inside of the trips formation. Based on Roberts’ route I don’t think he ever intended to throw him the ball as his man had good coverage playing off-man, but was actually attempting to look off the FS30 Landry over top of the play since Paul has a good height mismatch on CB21 Davis.

McCoy looks at Roberts and then immediately finds Paul who is running a corner route. Paul is covered well so McCoy finds Helu running a choice route over the middle. Watch Helu’s cut to break free of LB50 Freeman. Helu runs a great route and uses his elusiveness to avoid the takedown by FS Landry who doesn’t wrap him up near the 4 yard line.
