2nd and 9 at NYJ 37 (9:05) G.Smith pass incomplete short right to C.Johnson (J.Wilson).
Dolphins are in Cover-1 man, with a robber safety. Upon hitting his backfoot on the dropback, Geno’s under pressure, decides to bail and then throws a pretty dangerous pass to Chris Johnson who has a linebacker coming down on him. There’s nothing good about this play. Other than just the dangerous pass, after the initial pressure there’s still a perfectly good pocket in front of Geno if he just steps up without panicking. Take a look for yourself, this is what Geno sees after hitting his back foot.
3rd and 9 at NYJ 37 (8:49) (Shotgun) G.Smith pass deep right to E.Decker to MIA 13 for 50 yards (B.Grimes).
Dolphins are playing what looks like a Tampa-2, with a Linebacker dropping into the center deep zone while the safeties go into the intermediate zones. Geno’s forced to bail from the pocket when Cameron Wake and Jared Odrick manage to get uncovered despite the Dolphins only rushing 3. Although this isn’t the absolute best thrown ball, it’s a good throw for a deep ball taken on the run. It’s again made by Decker being in perfect position and putting his body between the defender and the ball but Geno does attempt to lead him into the open space and does a great job of everything in this play, especially keeping his eyes downfield.
1st and 10 at MIA 13 (8:01) (Shotgun) G.Smith pass short right to E.Decker to MIA 10 for 3 yards (J.Kovacs).
Dolphins are in a sort of Cover-2 zone. Geno’s first read is on Owusu doing some kind of Curl or delayed post, I don’t really know. This doesn’t look like confident route running. Either way, Geno holds his gaze into the middle of the field even after Decker runs across them to keep everyone focused there, and then turns and throws at Decker- but gives him a poorly placed high throw that’s also behind him. Geno hops when making this throw, but I don’t know if that’s the cause of the misplaced throw because he’s been doing that on a lot of throws this game and it hasn’t been affecting anything that much. It’s just a badly placed throw to me.
1st and 10 at NYJ 17 (4:20) (Shotgun) G.Smith pass deep left to J.Kerley to 50 for 33 yards (R.Jones).
Dolphins are in Cover-1 Zone. This is by far my favorite throw of the game, Geno’s first read is on Amaro, he sees all the bodies occupying that space before Amaro breaks on his In route and then moves onto Kerley where he just has the perfect throwing lane for a short period of time and he throws it in there exactly where it needs to be. If this is a WR with faster acceleration this might go for a touchdown. It’s just a perfect throw.
1st and 10 at 50 (3:44) (Shotgun) G.Smith pass short left to J.Amaro to MIA 39 for 11 yards (R.Jones).
Dolphins are in Cover-1 Man, with the corners playing way off. Geno makes the right read on the presnap and knows Amaro will be open immediately when he breaks into the flat. He also sees the defender on the outside and makes sure to throw it over him, instead of trying to get it past him. It makes the catch tougher on Amaro, but it’s the right move here.
1st and 10 at MIA 39 (3:21) (Shotgun) G.Smith scrambles right end ran ob at MIA 37 for 2 yards (J.Wilson).
Dolphins are in Cover-1 man. Geno makes his read on Sudfeld in the flat, then moves onto Ivory in the middle but chooses to bail from a pocket that’s getting a little close to him. However there’s no reason to bail, the pocket hasn’t been compromised and Ivory, who he just looked at, is open enough for him to take this throw. I appreciate aggression from a Quarterback, but it’s 1st and 10 and there’s 4 yards you’re just leaving on the field because that option wasn’t good enough for you. To me, it’s a bad choice.
2nd and 8 at MIA 37 (2:50) (Shotgun) G.Smith pass short left to J.Cumberland to MIA 37 for no gain (J.Jenkins).
Just a screen, nothing to gain here.
3rd and 8 at MIA 37 (2:02) (Shotgun) G.Smith pass short middle to E.Decker to MIA 25 for 12 yards (J.Wilson).
Dolphins are in Cover-2 man. Geno’s first read is on Decker going over the middle on an In route. He’s able to hit him but doesn’t throw the ball in optimal position, or with good timing and probably limits a lot of this catches potential. The ball should be thrown when Geno hits his back foot on the dropback, because Decker has position the entire time on Wilson, who’s turned in the wrong direction to cover this route. Instead, he not only throws it late but throws it at Decker instead of ahead of him, which causes Decker to have to stop to make the catch and giving Wilson time to close the space and make the tackle. Really not the optimal play.
2nd and 8 at MIA 23 (:46) (Shotgun) G.Smith pass short right to E.Decker to MIA 14 for 9 yards (J.Kovacs). MIA-K.Misi was injured during the play. His return is Questionable. NYJ-E.Decker was injured during the play. His return is Probable.
Another screen with not a lot of info to mine. Geno throws the ball into the right spot here with perfect timing with Decker though.
1st and 10 at MIA 14 (:16) (Shotgun) G.Smith pass incomplete short middle to J.Amaro.
Dolphins are in Cover-2 Man. Geno begins to stare at Amaro immediately at the snap but Phillip Wheeler looks like he’s thinking Geno’s staring at a Post and not an In, so he backs away. Geno really gives this play away with his eyes, even though with the space he got because of the Dolphins not reading him he does make a good throw. Unfortunately Amaro can’t hold on.
3rd and 8 at MIA 12 (15:00) (Shotgun) G.Smith pass short right to E.Decker to MIA 5 for 7 yards (J.Wilson).
Dolphins are looking like they’re in Tampa-2 again. Geno’s first read is on Kerley who he fakes a throw to but is spending too much time staring at. He should be moving on as soon as he sees that defender draped on Kerley to his next read, Decker who if thrown when Geno is taking his next step has a potential path to the endzone running straight up- but is still certain to get the first down even if he doesn’t. Instead, Geno clutches and is uncertain of what to do and then ends up throwing a low ball to Decker, although in this case it might not actually be the worst throw because of how close Decker is to Jimmy Wilson, this ball would be better thrown to the outside though. Either way, it’s all a bad play because in this area of the field your decision making has to be a lot quicker.
1st and 10 at NYJ 27 (5:46) G.Smith pass short left to E.Decker to NYJ 41 for 14 yards (D.Jordan).
Dolphins are in Cover-1 zone. Jets run another screen, not much to get out of it. Only point I have is that Geno isn’t fooling anyone with these weak fake handoffs.
1st and 10 at NYJ 41 (5:11) (Shotgun) G.Smith pass incomplete short right to J.Cumberland.
Dolphins are in Cover-2 Man. Jets run a play action bootleg and Geno doesn’t have a clean throwing lane to Cumberland. He makes the right decision by just taking the loss of down.
3rd and 12 at NYJ 39 (4:21) (Shotgun) G.Smith pass incomplete short right to E.Decker (C.Wake).
Dolphins are in Cover-1 with a safety robber. Jets call another WR screen and this time Wake is ready for it when his blocker releases into the flat. Geno should see this and pull the ball down, but it’s a better play by Wake than a bad play by Geno to me. I’m still giving him a negative for it.
1st and 10 at MIA 23 (3:28) (Shotgun) G.Smith pass deep right to J.Cumberland for 23 yards, TOUCHDOWN. N.Folk extra point is GOOD, Center-T.Purdum, Holder-R.Quigley.
Dolphins are running a crazy zone blitz where it looks like it should be a Cover-3 but someone makes a mistake. Jets call a designed rollout and Geno only has to read half the field. Geno recognizes the breakdown in coverage and the hole and finds Cumberland wide open for an easy touchdown. Although the mechanics are ugly again, cause he’s hopping as he throws- in this situation and with the player this wide open it just doesn’t matter, the ball just needs to be easy to catch and in the field of play and that’s where it is.
