Trae Waynes took the NFL world by storm on Monday, posting his time of 4.31 in the 40 yard dash and immediately sending him up every fan’s draft board. But how good is Waynes on the field? Last year his running mate Darqueze Dennard was taken in the 1st round by the Cincinnati Bengals. Many have said that Waynes is better than Dennard was last season. With his excellent combine, many have propelled Waynes ahead of CB’s such as Marcus Peters. Let’s take a look at how good Waynes really is.

DOB July 25, 1992 Bench (225 lb) 19 reps

Hands 8 1/4″ 3 Cone Drill 7.06 sec
40 Yard Dash (10 Yard Split) 4.31 sec. (1.53 sec.) 60 Yard Shuttle N/A

Scouting Report

  • He is a taller CB, so it is essential that he stays low. Waynes plays high sometimes and has trouble changing directions from time to time.
  • In man-to-man coverage he grabs to much and relies on this to help him stay in good position.
  • Waynes really excels in covering the deep ball, his size and speed combination as well as his ability to use his body to box out the WR, gives the WR almost no chance at making the catch.

The case of Marcus Peters is an interesting one, the top rated CB on many analysts draft boards throughout the season and then he was kicked off the team after multiple run-ins with his coaching staff. Although a very talented player, being dismissed from the team in your Junior season is not a very good sign and is worthy of a red flag. Although here at NFL Breakdowns, we are here to objectively evaluate Peters as a prospect for one of 32 NFL teams; we’ll leave the character questioning to the NFL teams. Let’s take a look at Marcus Peters.

DOB 9-Jan-93 Bench (225 lb) 17 reps

40 Yard Dash (10 Yard Split) 4.53 sec. (1.61 sec.) 60 Yard Shuttle 11.26 sec.

Scouting Report

  • At 6’0″ 197 lbs, Peters possess ideal size for a CB in today’s game
  • Being a “bigger” CB, Peters has incredible strength on the outside with WR’s at the line.
  • In press-man coverage, you will rarely see a WR get off the line free or easily
  • Peter is good at disrupting the route or taking the WR out of the play completely with his initial jam.

By this point everyone has seen Malcolm Butler’s final interception against Russell Wilson to end the Super Bowl, but how did he play in his other snaps? This breakdown will show you that outside of his interception, Butler was phenomenal sticking to his receivers in man-to-man coverage making plays all evening.

Play 17
Situation: 2nd and 8 at SEA 47
Description: Q3 - (1:54) (Shotgun) R.Wilson pass short right to J.Kearse to NE 47 for 6 yards (M.Butler).

Offense Formation: Shotgun Slot Left Far
Offensive Grouping: 11
Defense Formation: Cover 1, Four LB zones, CBs in man-to-man coverage

CB21 Butler lines up on the right outside covering WR15 Kearse in bump-and-run coverage. Kearse runs a hitch route to New England’s 44 yardline breaking inside. Butler plays inside technique on Kearse tightly but slips at the top of the route allowing Kearse separation for the reception.

Play 18
Situation: 3rd and 2 at NE 47
Description: Q3 - (1:12) (Shotgun) R.Wilson pass incomplete deep left to J.Kearse (M.Butler).

Offense Formation: Empty-Set Shotgun Trips Left Double Right
Offensive Grouping: 11
Defense Formation: Cover 1, Two LB zones, CBs in man-to-man coverage

Since not everyone understands what happened on Malcolm Butler’s interception I wanted to do a quick breakdown of the play that ended Super Bowl 49 for Russell Wilson and the Seahawks.

Edit [2/4/2015]: If you are interested in reading about all of Russell Wilson’s other plays please click here.

Situation: 2nd and 1 at NE 1
Description: Q4 - (:26) (Shotgun) R.Wilson pass short right intended for R.Lockette INTERCEPTED by M.Butler at NE -1. M.Butler to NE 2 for 3 yards (R.Lockette). PENALTY on NE, Unsportsmanlike Conduct, 1 yard, enforced at NE 2

Offense Formation: Shotgun Twins Stack Right Near

Offensive Grouping: 11 (1 RB - Lynch, 1 TE - Willson, 3 WR - Lockette, Kearse, Baldwin)

Defense Formation: Cover 1, Man-to-man coverage across the board

Play Concept: Rub/pick route

Pre-snap, Wilson is in shotgun with twins stack right with Baldwin in the slot. The Patriots have Revis directly over Baldwin and Browner playing shallow on the twins right with Butler directly behind. This is a very standard defensive call against twins stack.

Wilson motions Baldwin across the formation and Revis follows. This signals man-to-man coverage at least where Revis is concerned since none of the other defenders switch or move around they don’t “re-adjust” their zones if they are playing zone coverage here.… Article continues here

Richard Sherman is one of the most polarizing players on the Seahawks and the NFL in general. Against the Green Bay Packers, he faced Aaron Rodgers and multiple receiving threats. Jordy Nelson, Randall Cobb, and up-and-comer rookie Davante Adams all tested his coverage abilities. Sherman played well in coverage receiving a +3.0 grade from ProFootballFocus. In this game, he only allowed one catch for 6 yards on two targets with the other target resulting in an interception in the endzone. Let’s take a look at some of his plays.

Pass Coverage

Sherman stayed in his usual position as left cornerback playing man-to-man coverage on the line of scrimmage and occasionally switching to zone. If he did switch to zone it was primarily in Cover 3 playing the deep left zone. In this game, it was Sherman’s man-coverage that were truly the most impressive as he used his physicality to blanket receivers and exclude them from the game. Let’s take a look at some plays.

Play 3
Situation: 3rd and 10 at SEA 29
Description: Q1 - (11:23) (Shotgun) A.Rodgers pass deep right intended for D.Adams INTERCEPTED by R.Sherman [C.Avril] at SEA 0. Touchback.

Here is Sherman’s interception. Rodgers lines up in an 11 set in shotgun with trips right and WR17 Adams alone on the right outside.… Article continues here

Vontae Davis vs. Broncos

Jan 15, 2015
Derek Willems

Cornerback Vontae Davis is a former 2009 1st round draft pick, and in 2014 he had his breakout season. Pro Football Focus, ranked Davis second in the NFL at his position and caused me to take notice. This past weekend against Denver, one of the league’s top passing attacks, Davis shut down his side of the field. Davis defended 4 passes while only allowing 5 catches for 21 yards and receiving one of the highest playoff grades from PFF.

Vontae Davis had a fantastic season, yielding 0 TD’s and intercepting 4 passes. However, interceptions can be misleading at times due to tipped passes and bad throws. I decided to go back and check out the film to see how dominating Davis really was this past weekend. He didn’t disappoint.

Play 1: 2nd & 12. -24. 4:38 1st.

Defensive Formation: Nickel

Coverage: Cover 2

Offensive Personnel: 11 Personnel

The Colts are in a Cover 2 defense. Davis is guarding his flat zone to the right. The TE on Davis’s side runs a “Post” in order to split the defenders, while the opposite slot WR runs a drag route. The WR lined up across from Davis run a fade route, a Cover 2 beater due to the throwing window between the CB and the FS.… Article continues here

Odell Beckham Jr. vs. Redskins - 12 receptions, 143 yards, 3 TDs

Dec 18, 2014
Samuel Gold

Odell Beckham Jr. has taken the league by storm totaling 53 receptions, 757 yards and 5 TDs in the 8 weeks leading up to the Redskins game. Needless to say, Beckham represented a major challenge for the inept Redskins’ secondary. On the defensive side, Bashaud Breeland has shown a lot of promise as a starter as well, and this post will analyze their match-up as well as Beckham’s other receptions.

Stats:
Beckham (Total) - 12 receptions on 15 targets, 143 yards, 3 TDs
Beckham vs. Breeland - 3 catches allowed on 6 targets, 33 yards, 1 pass deflection
Beckham vs. Amerson - 5 catches allowed on 5 targets, 38 yards, 1 TD
Beckham vs. Biggers - 3 catches allowed on 3 targets, 51 yards, 2 TDs allowed

Right as soon as the game started and even before the first pass was thrown Breeland and Beckham get into a shoving match seen here:

This is the first of Breeland’s four penalties on the afternoon.

Play 1
Situation: 3rd and 2 at NYG 49
Description: Q1 - (13:16) (Shotgun) E.Manning pass incomplete short right to O.Beckham.

Beckham motions from the outside left to the outside right wide receiver position. After the snap, Beckham runs a quick out route underneath Breeland’s off-man coverage.… Article continues here

Joe Haden vs. T.Y. Hilton: 6 receptions, 99 yards, 2 TDs

Dec 12, 2014
Samuel Gold

Joe Haden allowed 6 receptions on 8 targets for 99 yards and 2 TDs versus T.Y. Hilton. Based solely on these statistics one would assume that Haden did not perform well facing the Colts’ top wide receiver, but in fact Haden was dynamic all afternoon and had one of the best games of his career. This post will breakdown Haden’s plays.

Stats - 6 receptions allowed on 13 targets for 99 yards and 2 touchdowns, and 2 passes defensed

Haden rotated between the Colts plethora of wide receivers and tight ends, but he mostly played against the Colts top receiver T.Y. Hilton.

Play 1
Situation: 2nd and 10 at IND 32
Description: Q1 - (3:23) (Short right to D.Herron to IND 35 for 3 yards (D.Whitner; B.Winn).

In play 1, WR13 Hilton is in twin stacks right against Hilton running a post route. Haden stays with the speedy wide receiver for the entire route. Haden initially jumps to the inside expecting Hilton to run a shallow crossing route, but he recovers immediately to blanket him up the field.

Play 10
Situation: 1st and 10 at CLE 39
Description: Q2 - (7:28) A.Luck pass short left to D.Herron to CLV 13 for 26 yards (C.Kirksey).… Article continues here
