Here is my scouting report on Jaylon Ferguson, EDGE out of Louisiana Tech University:
General Comments:
- Man amongst boys in his conference.
- Effort and sustain is average
- Good awareness in space
- Will overpursue at times
- Average finishing ability
- Ceiling isn’t high
Pass Rush:
- Extremely productive against non-Power 5 teams
- Needs to get better at using hands to disengage
- Will keep fighting to break contact to win in the backfield
- Up-and-under is one of his better moves using speed to power around edge
- Hip bend is average but enough to win occasionally with a well set up rip move from the edge
- Can establish half man relationships with his punch
- Has some force behind his punches if he gets his hands going
- Pass Rush Moves: Speed-to-power, up and under, Chop-rip
- Flashes of spin counter move inside and a bull-jerk through his blocker
Pass Rush Fails:
- Struggled at times to disengage from blocks if they win the hand battle
- Pass rush will fail if hands get inside his frame
- If he gets punched in the shoulder, his pass rush will stall around the edge
- Will sometimes take 4-5 steps to attack offensive lineman
- Has to get better at disengaging from blocks. Tight ends can stall him on the edge with good hand placement.
Run Defense:
- Good tracking of ball down the field
- Strength and length at point of attack
- Not the quickest at disengaging from blocks on the edge
